Friends,
I wanted to share a quick personal update as part of this weekend’s reads — because the conversation we’ve been having about our city’s charter and Home Rule is starting to matter in very real ways.
First — thank you.
Over the last week, so many of you took time to respond, weigh in, and let your voices be heard. That engagement matters more than you might realize.
Here’s the headline: 98% of respondents said Winter Springs deserves a simple up-or-down vote on the structure of our city government.
Not a politician’s decision. Not insiders behind closed doors. The people.
That level of agreement — across neighborhoods and backgrounds — is powerful.
Second — real movement may be happening.
I’m hearing from multiple sources around City Hall that, for the first time in more than a decade, a Charter Review Committee may finally be convened in the near future. If that happens, it’s a major win for residents. We’ve been advocating for this since 2021.
A charter review committee gives us a chance to propose reforms which restore true Home Rule in Winter Springs. If we get that opportunity, here’s what I believe we should be pushing for:
- A clear, resident-initiated process outlined in the charter to propose charter amendments, not just ordinances.
- A requirement that charter reviews occur regularly (perhaps every four years), so decades never pass again without residents having a voice.
This will give us a charter that reflects modern Florida Home Rule standards — not an outdated structure that limits accountability and voter input.
None of this happens without pressure. None of it happens without engagement.
And it certainly doesn’t happen without residents willing to speak up.
So again — thank you for leaning in. This is how change starts: quietly, steadily, and with people refusing to be ignored.
More soon. Enjoy the weekend reads.
